Welcome to the Official Blog of the Black Friday Races...1/2 Marathon, Marathon, 50K, 50M, 100K and 100M/ 24 hours.
Where did I get the idea for Black Friday Races... Well, I was talking to Ed, "the Jester" Ettinghausen and he told me he was looking for a 100 mile race over the Thanksgiving weekend... So, I put out a post on the So Cal Ultra Lunatics Blog and David Martinez suggested having a Black Friday Marathon... then he said he wanted to run a 50K instead....I know some ultra runners have friends who don't run ultras, so they can come run the half or full marathon instead, then crew or pace their friends as needed.
So, since we are all a little bit crazy, and my wife Annette has a guest from Monterrey, Mexico coming to visit that weekend, I decided that having a Black Friday Race Series would be a good idea. But she isn't going to help me set it up or work the aid station, so I will need more volunteers this time.
Preliminary plans are the following.
Race Venue... Sweet Water Regional Park for Start and Finish. Approx. 4.5 mile West loop with an out and back on San Diego County Groomed Running / Equestrian Trails. East loop will be about 5.5 or 6.5 miles along the Sweetwater Reservoir. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6093751There will be a hill on this course. It's not a real killer, but it could be fun after 100K or so. Aid station near the Starbucks at Central and Bonita Road and at Start / Finish. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6025721. The West loop is about 600 ft of climbing in 4.5 miles. The West loop should be roughly the same. So, it's about 1,200 ft per 10 miles, more or less. I will have more details once its all confirmed with the County, who manages all of the trails ( though some are actually Federal, but not subject to the shutdown). By the way, these are modest hills, not mountains, so there's no need to worry about Mountain Lions, Bears, carrying Oxygen, having a Sherpa, etc.
There are full hook up camping sites at the park for those who want to run 100 miles. I think they charge $33 for overnight. Also partial hook ups and pull throughs.
There is actually a Starbucks at the Far West end of the course, across the street from the trail. Crews can access the course from that point. There's Hans and Henry's pastry shop, Giant Pizza, Kentucky Fried Chicken also at that location. Mc Donalds and Jack in The box are 2 Miles down the road.
